A fun orchestral session open to children aged 7+ playing any instrument from around Grade 1 level. Parents are welcome to stay and/or play if they wish!
CCJO is run by Mark Tinkler (well-known in Cambridge schools as the presenter of English Pocket Opera Company’s SingFest). Mark is also one of the conductors of the ‘all-comers’ Cambridge Community Orchestra (CCO) which takes place in at St. Matthews on Sundays (6-8pm) and already includes several of the school’s parents and pupils.
We welcome all players of all standard orchestral instruments – PLUS – recorder, guitars, ukuleles – you name it! Also, for instance, if your child plays the piano and wants to be involved, come along – we will find a way of involving them on tuned and non-tuned percussion.

How do the sessions work?
We will be structuring the sessions in two halves. At most rehearsals we will rehearse two separate sections of musicians, then give them all a break (and offer refreshments in the new Café 440) before putting both sections together for the final half of the rehearsal.
Parents can also stay for the rehearsal – either in the rehearsal room as observers or helpers – or you can sit out in the community room with a cup of tea and newspaper. Alternatively, you can park up outside the school (free parking in Caroline Place) and go shopping. It’s up to you!

Who can join?
It would be good if children had an idea of how to read notation – so – as a guide – but only as a guide: ‘Year 3 and upwards and/or Grade 1 and upwards’.
However, we don’t want this to be a barrier to, say, someone with Grade 2 in Year 1 or someone who can play but isn’t taking exams. If in doubt, bring your child along for a trial session and we can have a chat about it.
How else can we get involved? Two memberships for the price of one!
Join the Cambridge Community Orchestra (CCO) which rehearses Immediately after the CCJO rehearsal – your subscription for CCJO also covers a subscription for CCO. CCO is a mixed-age, mixed-ability orchestra which you are also invited to join in with. This could be a key part of your child’s musical/orchestral development – as we encourage the participation in both orchestras – especially as we intend to stage joint concerts with the orchestras. Watch this space!
How do I sign up?
Just come along on a Sunday afternoon at 4pm. Look forward to seeing you there!! Any questions please contact Mark at camsmusictrustoffice@gmail.com
