Fête de la Musique in Saffron Walden – 24 June 2018
The Fête in Saffron Walden celebrated live music with over 80 bands covering a wide range of music genres from rock, pop, and jazz to world, big band, and Latin American. Music was performed in 11 venues round the town centre including the beautiful Jubilee Gardens, the Castle Grounds, Fairycroft House and several pubs and cafes. MRCO and the Jazz Choir took part in this with separate performances. It was an extremely hot day and the event was very well attended.
Scratch Messiah – St. Paul’s – March 31st 2018

CAMS Music Trust, in partnership with St. Paul’s Arts Festival, presented a 70-min version of Part 2 (the Easter music) of Handel’s great oratorio The Messiah. Helen Robbins formed a fabulous choir, made up of our own Community Choir supplemented by a host of other singers, whilst the Community Orchestra were supplemented by a number of other players. Helen Robbins prepared and conducted the choirs alongside Mark Tinkler. The orchestra and we were joined by Rachel Gordon (Soprano), Alistair Morfey (Tenor), Gavin Spence (Trumpet), Theo Tinkler (Cello continuo) and the amazing, international Counter Tenor – Lawrence Zazzo.
Visit from Harmonie de Cluny – Weekend of 7th/8th July 2018
This was the biggest event of the year for CMT. We welcomed 38 members of the L’Harmonie Municipale band from the medieval town of Cluny in Burgundy, plus accompanying family members. They visited Cambridge from Friday evening to Monday morning, were hosted by Community Orchestra members, and were provided with a wide range of tourist activities including a meeting with the Mayor of Cambridge. The highlight of the weekend was a collaborative concert at St Paul’s Church on Hills Road, where both the Community Orchestra and Harmonie de Cluny played an exciting range of repertoire, which included folk music from around Europe, South America plus pieces by Handel, Purcell, Delibes, and Weill.
The Place Where we Stand (Cambridge Bones)
A project with EPOC, 30Bird and St. Matthews Primary School, Cambridge – a project with composer Pete Letanka to commemorate the re internment of Victorian bones found underneath the playground during construction of new buildings.

Chamber Concert, St. John’s College – March 2018
A variety of groups and ensembles from the Community Orchestra played in a Chamber Concert in the New Music Room at St. John’s College, Cambridge. The ‘Tread Softly Quintet’ formed the backbone of the concert and accompanied orchestra members playing a range of music. The age of performers ranged from 11 years to 70+ years.
